Environmental Art Source 2 MBD - Go Green: A Resource Guide

The Basics:
Title: cARTalog
Author: University of Iowa Libraries
URL: http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/pr/cartalog/home.htm
Date: 2005

Notes:
At a Glance: This website provides information about the University of Iowa Libraries' cARTalog project, which gave 1 million cards from the retired card catalog a new life by incorporating them into art works. The goals of the project were to honor the card catalog, promote creative re-use of catalog cards, and bring people together.

Best for: Anyone interested in learning more about the history of the project and viewing the digital gallery of cARTalog art. People who want to learn more about the history of the card catalog can also visit theCard Catalog History portion of the site.

Standout Features: This was a highly publicized, successful project that found a creative way to recycle discarded catalog cards. The gallery provides images of selected cARTalogue pieces that showcase the variety of what has been done. The Card Catalog History page also includes links to other artists and projects using recycled catalog cards.

Keep in Mind: This project ended on September 2006 when the last of the million catalog cards was distributed. Portions of the site are currently in the process of being moved to the Digital Libraries Collection, so access may be temporarily hindered for some links. However, the site still serves to inspire creative recycling projects in their other communities.
