The Basics:
Title: Greener Choices
Author: Consumer’s Union (the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports)
URL: www.greenerchoices.org
Date: 2003-2007

Notes:
At a Glance: GreenerChoices.org is a web-based initiative to inform consumers through practical and unbiased advice about green products and practices. The site offers reliable, useful information in five product categories—Appliances, Cars, Electronics, Food, and Home and Garden as well as information on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, electronic waste and recycling, global warming and energy use. GreenerChoices.org aims to empower a critical mass of consumers (more than 110,000 visitors to the website per month) to make sustainable buying and living choices. The majority of the site is free to use; however, some of the product reviews and ratings are only available via subscription to Consumer Reports ($5.95/month or $19-$26/year).

Best for: This site is best for people who know they want to go green but aren’t quite sure how to go about it. If you know what you are looking for (appliance, car, food, etc.) the buying guides are a great resource to help one make an environmentally friendly decision before purchase. The website allows the user to search by topic in order to read articles relating to the subject of interest.

Standout Features: In addition to community forums and blogs, an e-mail newsletter and green product ratings, Greenerchoices.org has an online Electronics Waste Reuse and Recycle Center to educate consumers about the growing problems of electronic waste. Also the Green Consumer Toolkit contains interactive tools from toxics finders to carbon footprint and fuel economy calculators. The best feature of the site is the Eco-labels Center which contains a search tool for consumers to evaluate labels on food, household products, and wood.

Keep in Mind: GreenerChoices.org is run by Consumers Union an independent, non-profit testing and information organization with over 70 years of experience that provides unbiased assessments and advice about products and services. According to its website, Consumers Union accepts no commercial contributions, no outside advertising and no free samples in order to maintain impartiality. GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union are funded through individual contributions, the sale of its information products and services, and foundation and government grants. GreenerChoices.org has received funding from The Surdna Foundation, the Foundation of Donor Advised Funds, The Overbrook Foundation, and the Clarence E. Heller Foundation.
