The Basics:

Title: Green Living: The E Magazine Handbook for Living Lightly on the Earth
Author: Editors of E/The Environment Magazine, published by Penguin Group
Location:URL:Link to Worldcat
Date: 2005

Notes:
At a Glance: This book is a guide for the average consumer as to how to make healthy and environmentally conscious choices. The book evolved from E Magazine, founded in 1990, which launched a "Green Living" section in 1996 with articles on travel, health, the home, investing, consumer products and "eating right". It starts with the proposition that a majority of Americans are concerned about environmental degradation and wish to pattern their behavior in an environmentally conscious manner.

The book contains chapters on the following subjects: smart food choices, natural health care, chemical free personal care, natural fiber clothing, environmentally conscious choices for pet care, socially responsible investing, healthy household products, organic and pesticide-free products for babies, getting kids involved in green choices, organic gardening, renewable energy and conservation, ecotravel, fuel efficient transportation choices, and reuse and recycling.

Best for: Quick reference for suggestions on products to buy. A more thorough reading provides the reader suggestions for alterations in lifestyle and habits to bring about greener behavior.

Standout Features: This resource is very helpful because it educates the consumer as to why making certain choices is beneficial and then sets forth guidelines for making those choices. For example it describes the health risks of using shampoo and other personal care products containing certain chemicals and then lists chemicals to be avoided and suggests many healthy products that can be used instead, including recipes for mixing products at home. For each subject it presents the background material as a rationale for following the suggestions provided.

Keep in Mind: The book was published in 2005 so some of the websites may be out of date.
