Notes: At a Glance: Sponsored by National Geographic, this site seeks to educate the average home owner (or dorm room occupant, or garage enthusiast..) on simple ways to lower their overall impact on the environment. There are articles divided by "featured room", quizzes to see how you rate, and several 3-5 minute video clips with details on the impact various things on your home's efficiency and environmental friendliness. Best for: The average consumer. This site is a great starting point for learning about how to "green" your home, and has a lot of statistics about how simple activities like lowering your thermostat a few degrees or latex mattresses can help make your home more environmentally friendly. It doesn't go into enough detail for a home owner or contractor looking to drastically remodel their home. Standout Features: As part of National Geographic Society, the Green Guide has an extremely strong and powerful editorial advisory board. Their professional backgrounds ensure the high quality of the information provided by the Green Home Makeover. The quizzes add a nice interactive component to the website, and each correct answer is explained well. If you answer "incorrectly," it gives you suggestions to improve your home. Includes articles geared towards specific spaces, such as dorm rooms, home offices, and garages. Keep in Mind: National Geographic is a non-profit, educational and scientific organization. The website is ad-sponsored and the advertisements on each page seem relate to the main topics of that page. Many of the articles promote products, companies, and other resources which MAY have paid for the promotion. |
