Notes:
At a Glance: EarthCraft Houses began to recycle what would have been construction waste in Atlanta in 1999. Instead of hauling tons of construction products to landfills, the program developed ways of recycling the materials for immediate use on-site. Scrap wood and drywall became fillers for landscaping, concrete blocks were used in the neighborhoods to create community paths, metal scraps were collected with magnets and sold to recycling facilities. Through these simple steps, contractors were able to dramatically reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. The EarthCraft Home program requires training and inspection of the building site.

Best for: Residents in the Southeast who desire a low-impact home construction, contractors in all regions who would like to begin similar programs in their area, or anyone who wants to read about what is already possible when trying to reduce construction waste.

Standout Features: From small beginnings in Atlanta, this company has branched out throughout the southeast to provide houses built to specific requirements resulting in more environmentally friendly and healthier homes and neighborhoods.

Keep in Mind: EarthCraft is a for-profit company.
