The Basics:
Title: Good News for a Change: How Everyday People are Helping the Planet
Author: David Suzuki and Holly Dressel
URL: Find it at your local library.
Date: 2003

Notes:
At a Glance: This book, which consists of stories of what people are doing in their lives to help the environment, addresses many different aspects of life, including business, democracy, food and water, wildlife, and new ways to think and learn about the environment.

Best for: Someone who wants to see how other people put tips for being green into practice and made a difference. It is a good source for showing how one person really can make a difference.

Standout Features:
  • The narrative nature of the book. Getting to read stories about what good things people are doing for the world is a nice change from looking through lists of ways to be green.

  • Inspirational quotes separate sections of the chapters, helping to break up what is otherwise a long string of text. These divisions help make the chapters seem less daunting while, at the same time, offering insight into the topic from another source, either famous or not.

  • A list of organizations and resources, organized according to chapter heading, which would be helpful to the reader who is interested in obtaining more information.

Keep in Mind: Both authors have scholarly backgrounds: David Suzuki is a scientist and environmentalist, as well as a broadcaster, while Holly Dressel has a background as a writer and researcher.
