| Title: CommuterConnections.org Author: Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; National Capital Region Transportation Board URL: www.commuterconnections.org Date: Copyright 2007; Website accessed November 2007 Notes: At a Glance: This website focuses on making connections for carpooling, vanpooling and getting to work without driving your own vehicle in the Washington, DC metro area. The website also has an information section for employers to encourage them to implement programs to reduce the number of commuters on the road through transit subsidies and flexible work arrangements such as teleworking and alternative work schedules. The idea is to get cars off the road and thereby reduce congestion and provide environmental benefits. All services are free. Best for: Commuters in the Washington, DC area who want to rideshare, bike or walk to work. (see standout features) Standout Features: The site includes an outstanding collection of information about biking to work in the Washington, DC area, including rules for biking in the three jurisdictions in the area and guidelines for taking bikes on public transit (these guidelines cannot even be found on the transit system's website). CommuterConnections also offers a free "guaranteed ride home" to regular ridesharers whose unexpected change in plans may cause them to need a ride at different time than their regular connection. Keep in Mind: Ridesharing has its risks and riders and drivers should excercise caution and follow all rules and guidelines. Commuters must register with CommuterConnections and meet the participation guidelines listed on the website before accessing the connection features. The program is funded by the District, Maryland and Virginia Departments of Transportation as well as the U.S. Department of Transportation. Suggested by: enbn54 |
