| The Basics: Title: Beyond Earth Day: Fulfilling the Promise Author: Gaylord Nelson,Susan Campbell and Paul Wozniak URL: Find it at your local library. Date: 2002 Notes: At a Glance: Wisconsin senator (1963-1981) and founder of Earth Day Gaylord Nelson "[sketches] a brief primer of some of the most serious environmental threats with which we as a nation are grappling today” (xix). Best for: Nelson wants to inspire and re-ignite public passion for environmental action. Nelson's mission is to inform and call to action. He writes, “Where our planet’s health is concerned, I have always believed that a public armed with knowledge is a public armed with the means and determination to find a solution. The first Earth Day demonstrated that when the public understands the urgency of addressing the planet’s ecological ills, it acts” (xix). This book would be for anyone who wants to understand where we've been and where we're going. Nelson lends a great amount of authority and reliability to the book, from both a grassroots and a mainstream perspective. Standout Features: The book examines the forces that shaped the first Earth Day; presents report card on the health of the planet as it was in 2002 and current serious environmental threats. Nelson provides a history of environmental movement and the state of the movement today. Nelson challenges readers with his thought-provoking analysis of “why public fervor for action on environmental issues is lacking at the same time that overall public sympathy for environmental concerns is statistically strong as ever” (xx). Keep in Mind: Nelson ends his introduction with a caveat about the obvious political nature of his book: “Some of what is said here will be controversial and is apt to rankle quite a few. That’s happened before, as anyone who is an environmentalist knows. However, if what is said or proposed provokes action and discussion, it is well worth the effort” (xx). Further, this book is already five years old. But Nelson’s recommendations appear to be rather timeless, focusing on education, sound political leadership and overall changes in attitude. |
