I decided for my resources to focus on large-scale travel, including topics such as ecotourism and sustainable travel. These types of traveling can involve many things, but they are all concerned with preserving an aspect of the destination, such as culture or the environment. These sources are aimed at world travelers who want to do something more than soak up the sun. Ecotourism generally combines volunteer work or awareness that promotes environmentally sound practices with helping the local community implement practices that promote sustainability. It is extremely important to understand the nuances of ecotourism when planning a trip, because many companies that claim to "be green" are, in fact, doing more harm than good. My resources will help travelers understand the basics of ecotourism and offer suggestions for trips or experiences. Resource 1: The International Ecotourism Society I chose this resource because it has a little bit of everything. It gives basic definitions for ecotourism and sustainable travel, offers tips for planning, suggests destinations, travel agents, and travel companies, provides a forum for businesses, and lists other resources. Resource 2: National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations I chose this resource because it is a website that focuses on educating people about geotourism (a form of tourism that incorporates aspects of ecotourism and sustainable tourism), but is also a portal site that provides links to many other resources, from basic overviews of ecotourism, to specific companies that specialize in ecotours. The resources are divided into Professionals, Travelers, and Communities. It also has a section for organizations and governments that want to take the next step in preserving geographic places. Resource 3: Earthwatch: 2008 Expedition Guide I chose this resource because it is a very specific guide. It provides detailed explanations of the expeditions available through Earthwatch (a non-profit organization that runs research expeditions that encourage sustainability), including an overview of the entire expedition, dates, meals and accomodations, prices, and what is to be accomplished. Resource 4: Code Green: Experience of a Lifetime I chose this resource because it is a good travel guide for sustainable destinations. Always using the three main principles that guide ecotourism- environment, culture, and economy- as criteria, Code Green offers suggestions for destinations, practical travel advice, and beautiful photographs. Resource 5: Sustainable Travel International I chose this resource because it offers a resources for more than just travelers. Businesses and educators are a focus, and some interesting programs are available. Resource 6: Ecotourism and Sustainable Development: Who Owns Paradise? I chose this resource because the author effectively raises questions about some aspects of ecotourism. She critiques some companies and cautions the reader. This is a very in-depth book and raises a lot of issues affecting ecotourism, and travel in general, such as politics, development, human rights issues, and money.
